Adnan Oktar: The hypocrites of the Prophet's era spent their entire lives in fear of their hypocritical natures being discovered. That is why they were constantly on the edge, feeling anxious and restless when they were around our Prophet. The constant fear of being caught would virtually paralyze them. There are many verses and hadiths regarding this fear of the hypocrites. The issue that would distress and agonize the hypocrites the most was the suffering they went through in the company of the Prophet. In fact, nothing came close to the torment they suffered in the company of the Prophet. They did assist Muslims greatly; yet what pained them the most was the fear they would feel when they were around the Prophet -the fear of being identified by the Prophet, the fear that a verse regarding them being sent down- and the constant humiliation they suffered by the Prophet. Our Prophet put these cowards through humiliation their entire lives. This is a great miracle. Normally, one would expect them to feel at ease. For example, believers always feel calm and peaceful, whereas hypocrites live in endless misery. So do those with sickness in their hearts; this is what the Qur'an tells us. The Prophet was the main source of their anguish. The presence of our Prophet was what makes the hypocrites suffer the most. They would always feel very restless. The same is also true for those with sickness in their hearts. On the other hand, the believers would feel like they were in gardens of heaven whenever they were in our Prophet's company. In the 50th and 51st verse of Surah al-Muddaththir, Almighty God says;
"...[they run from the Reminder] like panicked donkeys, fleeing from a lion."
God likens the hypocrites to panicked donkeys fleeing from a lion. This means that Lion has always been the symbol of the Mahdi movement. So hypocrites would flee from Muslims like panicked donkeys, spending the rest of their lives regretting all the effort they have devoted to Islam. They would remember all the means and wealth they had helped the Prophet and Muslims acquire, being tormented by the thought for the rest of their lives. Not to mention the stress and tension they went through in the presence of our Prophet. Since they lived in constant fear of being caught and the humiliation our Prophet put them through as he saw through their pretensions, hypocrites would always painfully reminiscence about their experiences.
In our Prophet's era, the hypocrites of Medina would argue among themselves, saying "Muslims have prevailed over us and grown in numbers in our own homeland." They were exceedingly upset about this fact. They would quarrel with and complain among each other, saying "This is your own doing. You willingly exchanged with them your daughters in marriage, and shared your possessions." Their quarrels would involve even harsher language. The companions told the Prophet that 'since these people are all hypocrites, they should be humiliated and banished." Our Prophet advised his companions to remain calm, and gradually transferred all the properties the hypocrites owned over to the Muslims. Hypocrites willingly gave all their means and possessions over to the Muslims, confident that someday the Prophet would be martyred and they would get them back.
